Part of any beginner's reference on stained glass is outlining the risks, something Cooper, with coauthor Giaquinta, takes seriously, setting out all the parameters of stained-glass safety--from wearing closed-toe shoes to holding glass vertically--and repeating them throughout. This book's most impressive section, though, is a sidebar devoted to Cooper's cabin of stained glass, built with help from loved ones and acting as a testament to her skills. Novices can expect all the familiar faces of how-to books: tools and supplies, an examination of materials, and clear directions on finishing, all well illustrated with quality color photographs. Then the question of how to start in a craft this exacting is answered with the choice of projects, such as light-reflecting suncatchers. A few additional designs venture out of the traditional mobile, like a butterfly plant stake or a memento box. Those curious about why artists gravitate to this craft will appreciate interviews with a handful of international stained-glass artisans, which just might move readers into the ""let's try this"" category.
